Dearly beloved,
This Sunday is the day we honor God as the Triune One. Much ink has been spilled over the years trying to understand the Trinity. I’m not sure about you, but the more I try the more questions arise.
Author Frederick Buechner writes: “Father, Son and Holy Spirit mean that the mystery beyond us, the mystery among us, and the mystery within us are all the same mystery. Thus the Trinity is a way of saying something about us and the way we experience God.”
Mysteries are something that we want to solve or make sense of. I love a good mystery novel because usually by the end of the book all the questions are answered and the truth revealed. God as mystery is not something to solve but rather to stand in awe of, to ponder and marvel at. Buechner says this about mystery: “to say that God is a mystery is to say that you can never them down. Even on Christ the nails proved ultimately ineffective.”
So, let us marvel at the mystery of the Trinity and all the ways that God has chosen to reveal God’s self to us!
peace in Christ,
Pastor Jen
