Today’s Readings:
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
Mark 13:32-37
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven
(Ecclesiastes 3:1)
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7)
Dearly Beloved,
One of our readings for this Sunday is from Ecclesiastes 3; it is the most familiar passage from this book of the Bible – “a time to …”. I don’t know about you, but the song from The Byrds runs on repeat in my head (have I now planted that earworm in your head?!) We probably could put together a HUGE playlist with songs about time – see my social media post where you can share your favorite “time” songs. We probably could come up with just as many idioms about time – such as “time flies when you’re having fun” or “it’s about time” or “in the nick of time”.
We often limit our view of time to that which is defined by a clock or calendar. This is what the Greeks called Chronos or chronological time. They used another word for a different understanding of time and that is kairos. This
can be defined as an opportune or critical moment. In the New Testament, it points to God’s moments, times when God’s purposes are at work. These are beyond the ordinary and are filled with the grace of God.
In seeking to be better stewards of the gift of time, God invites us into divine time. We are called beyond the ticking of the clock to see how God is working in the midst of this world.
How does this change how you view the time that is entrusted to you?
Join us for worship this Sunday as we reflect together on the gift of time.
peace in Christ, Pastor Jen
